The Secret Garden by Francesb Hodgson Burnett (2000)
I read The Secret Garden. This book is a kind of human and dram. This story is a little long, but I like this book. I’ll introduce this book.
The Main
character Mary was a very selfish, disagreeable, bad-tempered little girl. Her
parents die because of disease. And then, she went to her uncle’s house. She
couldn’t put on her clothes by herself, because she did it by her servant. She
always stay home. One day, she was recommended to go out to be in the fresh air
and play by new her servant. She hadn’t gone out by herself, so she hadn’t
known how to play by herself. Also she heard about the secret garden from her. She
went out and walked around, then she wandered through the great empty gardens.
She didn’t know why her uncle locked the garden of her wife. Just then she
noticed a robin singing to her from a tree the other side of wall. She thought
that tree’s in the secret garden, there is an extra wall here, and there’s no
way in. From this day, she went out and had many experiences. She became to an
active girl. Some days passed, she found a key. It’s a key to open the secret
garden. She entered the garden and made up her mind to return the beautiful
garden. And it is same time, she found one secret about uncle’s son. He was ill
and losing to live. She took him to the secret garden. Then, he became good and
he was able to walk by himself. He changed to a good and fine boy.
I
think, by reading this book, a lot of experiences change the characters to be adult.
Trying and acting are so good to find new interesting things, change my weak
points, and to have chances. In this story, Mary was changed by opening her
mind and going out. I think I want to try and act without being afraid, and
then I want be like Mary.
I wrote down three quotes from The Secret Garden and will discuss them. The first: “Ben stopped smiling and picked up his spade.” (p,16). This sentence made me clear that Ben have some secrets. I become to know the secrets and I was looking forward to reading the story. The second: “’ You didn’t hear anything! Go back to your room now. And if you don’t stay there, I’ll lock you in!’” (p.18). This word was said by Mrs Medlock. She also has secrets. I thought this story has not only the secret of the garden, but also the another one. There are many secrets, so it is so fun to read the continuance of the story. The third: “’ Perhaps it’s been buried for ten years,’ she whispered to herself.” (p.21) The main character found about the secret garden. After then, she knows her uncle’s secret, too. He had lived this lonely life for ten years, his heart full of sadness and his head full of dark dream. He lost his wife, so he closed the beautiful garden. One day he had dream, and his wife said him that she is in the garden. When he woke up, he remembered about the dream. This dream made him visit the garden. And he knew the power of this garden. It is so happy.
This story was interesting. There are secrets and good stories. And you can
feel the growth of the main character. Please read and check about the secret
