英語教育講義⑤ October 28

 

     I learned about the balanced learning method. There are four points, Meaning-focused input, Meaning-focused output, Language-focused learning, and Fluency development. I thought being a few unknowing words was much better when we read books. Because we could guess them and we don’t feel hard. I found the useful point in this class. If we remember the words, we should think how we can use these words. I thought I didn’t have it enough and I’ll try it. In the next class, I can hear other students’ learning method, and I’m looking forward it.

     I read The Beautiful Game this week. This book was about football. I understood about baseball rule, but I didn’t know about football, and I decided to read this book. I’ll tell you about football I was interested.

     There are some kinds of football in different parts of the world. Soccer is one kind of football. In the USA, many people watch and play American football. It uses a ball like a rugby ball, and players can kick the ball but also pass it with their hands. It’s a hard game and can be dangerous. In Ireland, people can play Gaelic football. In this game, the ball is round and players can catch it but do not throw it. In Australia, there is a game called Australian rules football with eighteen players in each team. Players can kick or hit the ball but not throw it. 

     I was interested in difference football in different countries. These rules in each countries are a little different. I could understand the football’s history, stars, problems. If I have a chance to watch or play football, I would like to do.

San Francisco 2

 

     I’m going to write about San Francisco more detail. I’ll introduce Golden Gate Park, chapter 7 in San Francisco.

     People visit Golden Gate Park when they want to escape city life. They can go there on foot or by bus. We can find a lot of things in Golden Gate Park, for example, big fountains, tall tree, and beautiful garden with colorful flowers. This park is the biggest one in the United States. It’s 5 kilometers long and 1 kilometer across. People use this park to run and walk because we can go for more than 41 kilometers around the park.

     The park began in the early 1870s and William Hammond Hall, a famous man, and John McLaren, the Scottish gardener, started work on the area. They made a green garden and the gardener planted 155,000 trees. There are different parts in the park. We can see a beautiful Japanese garden, too. It was designed by Makoto Hagiwara in 1894 and it’s the oldest Japanese garden in the United States. Visitor often take pictures of nice Japanese bridge. The park has not only gardens but also wonderful buildings. The Conservatory of Flowers was built from wood and glass. It has about 20,000 different flowers and little trees. We can find oranges and bananas, too.

     When visitor walk in the park, they can see the big wild animals with long hair. They are buffalo (American bison). They first began to live there in1894. They stay quietly in their area of the park and cannot escape.

     People in San Francisco love being out with their friends. Every body likes to enjoy playing tennis, football, or baseball in this park. You can see a lot of families and children on the bicycles, too. Young students like to skate very fast here and sometimes jump wildly over things. Visitor often sit and watch them.

 

     We can enjoy garden buildings, animals, and sports in Golden Gate Park. I think the park has various ways to use and enjoy and we can enjoy from children to elder people. I was interested in a Japanese bridge. In this book, there is one picture of it. I think the design’s bridge was rarely seen in Japan now. If I visit this park, I’d like to walk the bridge. I was also interested in sports area. We can play sport, run, and walk in this park. I think this park make us healthy because we can exercise, relax, and green views are good for our eyes. My desire to visit Golden Gate Park is getting stronger!

      I studied about the factor of learners. I was interested in Modern Language Aptitude Test (現代言語適正テスト). There were 4 types aptitude test. We did the test. I could understand which ability is good at for me, and my weak ability, too. If we have one of them, we could study by using the ability and recover other weak points. I was interested in the factor of age. I understood older learners can study more efficient and younger learners are much better. Children have their brain flexibilities and they have time to concentrate the input. After that, they have confidence and start to talk. The input is useful for older people to study. I think learners have each personality and if they find each strong point in studying languages, it’s helpful to study more efficient and more fun.

     I read The Olympic Games this week and it was very interesting for me because there were many things I didn’t know and I was surprised.

     Do you know when and where the Olympic starts? It’s about 2,800 years ago in Olympia, Ancient Greece. At that time, there was only one sports event, a race of about 200 meters. Later, the Olympic Games were increased and athletes were come from many countries. The first Olympic stadium was built in the middle of sixth century BCE. In Olympia, there were a swimming pool and a gym.

     The ancient Olympics went on for 1,200 years. In 393 CE, it was stopped. In 1889, nearly 3,000 years after the first Olympic games, Pierre de Coubertin learned about Ancient Olympia and decided to organize a modern Olympic Games because he wanted young people to play more sport. In 1804, the International Olympic Committee started. It organized the first modern Games in Athens in1896. At that time, there were only 241 athletes from fourteen countries and all of them were men. Many things changed from the first Olympic Games. Countries build bigger stadiums and ‘Olympic villages’ with rooms for all athletes. The Olympic were on TV for the first time in 1963. Now, there were Winter Olympic Games, and Paralympic Games for people with disabilities.

     I like to watch the Olympic Games. I always watch volleyball games. These Olympic Games give us impressions, and they become our power. However, Tokyo Olympic was postponed from 2020 to 2021 because of coronavirus. I was looking forward to it. Athletes may confuse because they are training for Olympic as one of the goals. In this book, the sentence was written, “One of most important ideas behind the Olympics is that sport is for everybody” (p,12, l.8). I hope everybody around the world can enjoy the Olympic Games next year.

     I studied about the influence of the mother tongue. Babies, 6~8 months old, can discriminate any sounds, including w and y. r and l. However, babies, 10~12 months old, are difficult to discriminate some sounds. They don’t pay attention the sounds they don’t need. Excluding is more efficient to grow. We also talked about the positive and negative transfer. The transfer has some problems. In the small group, I found katakana- English is sometimes not good to study right pronunciations. On the other hands, it’s sometimes helpful for beginner to study English because it’s easy to image the word’s pronunciations. When I heard this idea, I found katakana-English had not only the negative transfer, but also the positive transfer.

     Do you know the celebrations in the world? I read Seasons and Celebrations which tells us about world celebrations, including Christmas, Mother’s Day, and Easter. We can learn celebrations’ date, history and food. I’ll introduce one celebration from this book.

     Do you know the festival held between 31 October and 2 November? It’s Halloween! 31 October was called All Hallow’s Eve and gradually the name changed to Halloween. Hundreds of years ago, people thought that bad spirits, like ghosts, came in the winter. They made fires outside and jack o’lanterns, usually pumpkin, to go away bad spirits. People enjoy doing this now. People also dressed like witches and ghosts. They hold the Halloween party, too. One Halloween game is ‘bobbing for apple’. Someone puts some apples in a big bowl of water. Without using their hands, players have to take an apple out of the water with their teeth. Players usually get very wet. In Canada and the USA, and in some English-speaking countries, children go ‘trick or treating’. If answerer choose the trick, the children play a trick on them like throwing an egg or some flour at the house.

 

     Like English- speaking countries, people in Japan wear costumes including ghosts, zombies, animation characters, and famous persons. They also enjoy Halloween recent years. I’ve enjoyed the party with my friends for some times, but I didn’t know the reason why they made pumpkin lantern and dressed. I think ‘bobbing for apple’ is difficult. If I had a chance to play, I would try it.

英語教育講義② October ７

Today I learned about motivation. Motivation has six types and changes in one year, one day, or one hour. It’s different for each person. I have experienced the change of motivation, too. I think it’s difficult to keep student’s motivation if I become a teacher. To keep motivation, there are Pre-actional stage, Actional stage, Post-actional stage. I think these stages are helpful for us because this cycle is good to ready, keep, and look back by ourselves. When we discussed about motivation in small group, it was interesting to hear other students’ idea that I had not ever had my idea.

My idea for keeping and increasing motivation is to connect my favorite things. Now I’m studying English in connection with my favorite foreign songs. Listening to music, I write the lyrics, and then correct and check the meaning. It’s not boring and I can feel I want to study other songs.

San Francisco

     I read San Francisco. It has much information like geography, history, travel. I learned about San Francisco from this book, so I’ll tell you about San Francisco!

 

     San Francisco is on the west of the United States. Most people visit there by car, bus, or plane, but some people take the train and go across the country on the famous old railroad. Many visitors are interested in the famous places including the Golden Gate Bridge, the Golden Gate Park. People began to call this wonderful place ‘The Paris of the West’.

 There are about seventy hills in San Francisco and they are good places for photographers. But we have to be careful about the weather because it often changes. We can see blue skies, and one minute later, there is only the famous fog. The hills break the town into different part and these are called neighborhoods. Today, some of them have many people and shops. We can go to Chinese restaurants and Japanese food shops. This is because many families from across the world move to the city.

San Francisco is famous for hundreds of books and films. Martin Eden wrote about the lives of people in old San Francisco. One film is filmed by using the Golden Gate Bridge. Many books and films were used the San Francisco fog. Like these things, people know about San Francisco and visit San Francisco.

I had one question. Why is the fog happened in San Francisco？ The reason was also written. San Francisco is very near the water, between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. It’s the reason weather in San Francisco often changes, too. The temperature in the winter doesn’t change a lot from the temperature in the summer. The weather is usually worse in the summer months from June to August. In these months, a lot of fogs happen from the Pacific Ocean. The best weather is often in April, May, September, or October, so I recommend to visit in the spring or in the autumn.

I was interested in the Golden Gate Park. It’s the biggest city park in the United States. It has different parts of the park. One part was built the oldest Japanese garden by Makoto Hagiwara. In this book, we can see the picture of the Japanese bridge. I was surprised there is it in San Francisco. 

The information is one part of this book. After reading this book, I could the early history and today’s San Francisco, and I think I want to visit there someday. If you read this book, you might become to visit San Francisco, too.
