     I learned about multicultural society and culture shock. I studied misunderstanding between different countries. It is formed involvement and inexpedience. We sometimes misunderstand each other if there are the different rate of involvement or inexpedience. I also learned the process of cultural adaptation. It has three models, and I have experienced one of them, Stress adaptive dynamic model. We talked about culture shock in a small group. When I discussed with foreigner, they expressed their idea clearly, but I could not explain my idea appropriately and ambiguously. At that time, I felt differences between each culture.

 Skyjack!

     I read Skyjack! last week. This book is a suspense story about the hijacked plane. This book was easy to read because of a few of difficult words. I’ll write about this book.

     The large plane was skyjacked and there are many passengers. The Prime Minister was given the list of passengers. In the list, there is a name of her husband, and she was very frightened. The hijacker wanted three things. Firstly, to set free their two brothers from prison. Secondly, they want to refuel the plane to fly to another country. Thirdly, they wanted to put in all newspapers because they were fighting for freedom. The Prime Minister spoke to them and she decided to pass their brothers. How did she solve this hijack and protect the passengers? I want to read the end of this story.

     I was excited while reading this book. I think you will also feel the same mind with me. I recommend to reader who like the suspense books.

英語教育講義⑦ November 11

 

     I learned student’s studying ways in the class. I was inspired them through their presentations. There are many ways, especially, I was interested in the way of watching movies. It doesn’t watch one time. First step is watching only English sound. Second step is watching with English subtitle. Final step is watching with Japanese subtitle. If I have free time, I want to try it. I think it’s important to find the best way I can continue to study, understand well and enjoy. To find it, I’ll try several ways that I learned studying ways.

New Yorkers Short Stories

 

     I read New Yorkers Short Stories. This book has five short stories about New Yorkers. I’ll introduce my favorite one story.

     I’ll tell you about Soapy’s Choice, chapter2. Soapy sat on a seat in Madison Square, New York. Winter was coming, and he knew that he must make his plans. He wanted three months in a nice, warm prison, with food and good friends. He decided to go to prison. He began to try some plans to go to prison. He tried to eat dinner at restaurant without paying., to throw a stone at a shop window, and so on. However, he couldn’t go to prison unfortunately. He was unhappily. He walked backed to Madison Square and home. On a quiet corner, he found a beautiful old church. Then he remembered the happily days and decided to change his life and find his new job. Then, he felt a hand on his arm. The arm was policeman. The policeman asked him what was he doing there, and said to Soapy to come with him. He must go to prison for three months.

     This story was bad end. Soapy decided to change himself, but it couldn’t be fulfilled because of his intrusion into a church. I felt empty because his hope was lost although he had a chance to change. I also felt it was right because he committed some crime. I read this story with my mixed feelings.

英語教育講義⑥ November 4

 

　I learned the ways to study by listening other students’ presentation. I thought everyone has each different way and they were very interesting and attractive for me. For example, sticky note is good idea. The way is writing word and sticking places we can see on a daily basis. We can change sticky note’s colors depending on the part of speech. I am not good at memory of new words and I can stick every place in my home because I’m living by myself. I want to try it. I’m looking forward to next class’ presentations.

     I read Climate Change this week. Do you know why climate is changing? If I had asked it before reading this book, I couldn’t have answered well. I learned about climate partly in junior high school and high school, but I could understand more detail in this book.

 

     Many people know the Earth has changed and it’s changing now. Changes can come from outside the Earth, for example, the Earth’s orbit, they can also come from inside the Earth. For instance, the volcano. However now, people are changing the climate.

     I think we know the Earth is getting warmer now. A Swedish scientist, Svante Arrhenius, was the first person to measure the effect of CO₂ on the climate in 1896. He said the atmosphere will become 5℃ warmer. He thought that this would happen in 2,000 years’ time. However, today’s scientists think it will happen in next fifty years.

     This book has the section What can we do? In this section, I found ‘carbon footprint’. It can measure how much I put carbon into the atmosphere, but we need to reduce. If we don’t use TV or computer, we should turn off. We can start small things for reducing carbon, and I’ll start now!
