The
Elephant Man by Tim Vicary (2000)
I
read The Elephant Man. This is a true and tragic story. A
man is main character but he doesn’t look like us. He looks like an elephant
and was called the elephant man. His name is Joseph Merrick. One day, Dr
Frederick saw a picture in the window of a shop near the hospital. The picture
was the elephant man. Dr Frederick read the writing under the picture. It said:
Come in and see the Elephant Man. Two pe nce.
I
write down one quoters from The Elephant Man and will talk about it.
“Dr Frederick read the writing under the picture. It said: Come in and see
the Elephant Man. Two pence.” A shopkeeper made money by showing the
Elephant Man around the world. Dr Frederick wanted to help the man, but he
could not stay at the hospital because the beds in the hospital are for ill people.
He told the Hospital Chairman about Merrick. The Hospital Chairman wrote a letter
to the editor of The Times newspaper to collect money for Merrick’s room.
The readers are so kind. They had £50,000, and Merrick
could live in the hospital for all his life. As Merrick spend good time, he met
many kind people, talk them, and go outside. After enjoying his life, he passed
away.
I hadn’t
known this is true story util I finished to read it. I surprised this was true
and shocked the shopkeeper use the man to make money. And I feel happy the man
knew people’s kindness and joy of going outside. I think it’s good that his all
life was miserable life, and he looked happy by spending his own life. if you were interested in this book, please check this movie, too.
