Matty Doolin

Matty Doolin by Catherine Cookson (1997)

I read Matty Doolin by Catherine Cookson. The main character is Matty who is fifteen years old, and he is leaving school in a few weeks’ time. He wants to work with animals, but his father wants him to get a job in ship-building. He can’t say his parents about his work. He went camp with two friends as graduation memorial.

I’ll write down one quotation and talk about camp’s incidents. The quotation: “Would you like to see round farm?” he asked. (p.15) Mr. Walsh walked round the farm with the boys, and he showed them all the animals and explained all the work of the farm. Matty’s friend asked most of the questions, on the other hand, Matty didn’t say anything and listened carefully to every word. He approached to his dream by understanding the work of the farm. And he helped on the farm. Some incidents happened during his camp, and he helped the work of farm without talking. Mr. Walsh need help on the farm, and he likes him, and then he decided to give the work on the farm. Matty felt happy.

By reading this book, I thought there are someone who watching the act and it’s hard to tell quickly without talking. He didn’t talk but he always acted something. And it led to his dream. I think it’s the best way to act something to approach my dream and tell my idea and feeling.

The Piano

The Piano by Rosemary Border (2000)

I read The Piano last week. This story is one pianist’s story. His name is Anthony. This beginning is the scene of his eightieth birthday concert. In this book, you can know how he became a pianist in spite of poor family when he was a child. Then let’s move to contents.

I write down two quotations from this book and I’ll discuss them. The first: But Tuesday mornings were different, because Tuesday was music day. (p.5) He didn’t enjoy studying because he was not clever, so he just sat down at his desk. But he enjoyed music day on Tuesday. This class was the opportunity to touch the music. The second: ‘I can play the piano,’ he thought. ‘Nobody taught me, but my mind tells my fingers what to do, and I can make music.’ (p.15) When he was thirteen years old, he went to Mr. Wood’s farm to earn. He found the old piano in the garage, and he touched it. I surprised that he had never learned how to play the piano, but his piano was beautiful. There was one problem. The piano had to take away to clean the garage. But he wanted to play it. He came up with good way to play it.

I want you to read the good idea and know how to be a pianist. I think he could be a pianist because he had the talent of music and coincidences. After reading this book, I felt it is heartwarming. How about reading it?

ANNE of GREEN GABLES

ANNE of GREEN GABLES by L. M. Montgomery (1994)

I read ANNE of GREEN GABLES this week. I had known the title of this story, but I had never read it. I had a question at first. What is “Green Gables”? It means the place where Anne lived. The main character is Anne. She is thin and white, with a lot of freckles and has red long hair and large green eyes. She came to Matthew and his sister’s house in Green Gable, but they didn’t want girl. Because they want a boy who can work in his farm. What will happen to Anne in this story?

I’ll write down some quoters, and talk about them. The first: ‘But am I talking too much? Please tell me. I can stop if necessary, you know?’. (p.5) This is one scene of talking of Anne and Matthew. She likes to imagine and she had had been poor time, so she talks to him a lot. He answered he liked to listen her. I think she found he is kind. The second: ‘Will you call me Cordelia?’ (p.5) She said Matthew and his sister to call her Cordelia. I wondered why she wants to call her Cordelia. This is not true name. She thought it’s a beautiful name and her real name is not interesting. I surprised she also imagined her name. She imagines at a lot of scene. But I think she changed a little by little through the experiences in Green Gables.

This book is famous. I’m glad to read and know about it. I found this dram in Netflix before, so I want to watch it when I have free time. And I want to enjoy the picture, too.

Remember Miranda

Remember Miranda by Rowena Akinyemi (2000)

I read Remember Miranda this week. This story is a kind of suspense. Some people in this story. Cathy is a woman who began her new job with the Harvey family. I’ll introduce the family members. Duncan and Miranda are a married couple. They have two children, Tim and Susan. Their grandmother lives with them. Juliet is Miranda’s sister who often visit them. Nick is a man who lives across the field. They expect Cathy met Miranda, because she is dead.

I wrote down some quoters from Remember Miranda and will discuss them. The first: “’…… I’m not going to tell Duncan about your evening with Nick, but I don’t want you to see Nick again.’” (p.12). This word was said from grandmother to Cathy. In this scene, Cathy felt angry, because she wanted to meet Nick. After this conversation, she heard about Nick from two children. They were afraid Nick, and they recognized he’s a bad man because grandmother told them so. Duncan hates him, but they don’t know why. Cathy suspected that the Harvey family had the secret. The second: “’I wanted to forget all about it,’ Duncan said slowly. ’It was a very difficult time……” (p.33). This is Duncan word. Duncan told Cathy about the relationship of Miranda, Duncan, Juliet and Nick. She knew about the secret.

I didn’t write down the secret because I want you to read yourself. This story was interesting because I didn’t know the secret till the last. I think Cathy was gloomy and Duncan also had his hidden trouble, so they missed each other. They got better at the last scene. How about reading this book?
