英語教育講義⑬ December 23

 

     I learned 3 principals of CLBT more detail. Counterbalanced instruction emphasizes language across the curriculum. In Japan, there is an excessive focus on teaching language, with little attention paid to providing meaningful and comprehensible input through content. In a typical Japanese RFL situation, a good way to improve the balance of content and language is to decrease the amount of language teaching and increase the amount of content taught in English. I thought I had English class which focus on the language. I think it’s important to balance the language and content.

英語教育講義⑫ December 16

     I learned Content-based language learning. In this class, many professors were introduced and there are some schools that implements immersion education and teaches the International Baccalaureate in Japan. I was interested in “two for one” which was referred by Patsy Lightbown and Nina Spada. Most students learned to read and listen to French enough to understand their lesson and they don’t lose in terms of development in their mother tongue and learning content knowledge.

    There were many words about education in this class, too. I think I should understand and gain the knowledge and word in education.

The Last Sherlock Holmes Story


     I read The Last Sherlock Holmes Story this weekend. This is a suspense story about Sherlock Holmes and a parody written by Michael Dibdin.

     This story appears Holmes and his friend, Watson. This time’s crime is terrible. The criminal was called Jack the Ripper because he cut body open and ripped up with a terrible and unnatural violence. One woman was no more than blood and meat. I think Jack the Ripper scared and cruel. Holmes and Watson investigated him. One day, Watson suspected Holmes was Jack the Ripper because of his strange action. The end of this story was difficult for me to understand.

     The crime was very terrible and the sentences showed me more concreate situation. The reality intrigued to read this book.

英語教育講義⑪ December 9

 

     I learned about working memory. I don’t have good skill for memory, so I was interested in this class. We actually tried the repeating words which was said by another person in the small group. It was difficult to repeat the long sentences. I learned that the phonological loop can hold only about 2 seconds of sound information, and is limited to about 5 to 7 pieces of information. I experienced them in the small group. To memory much easier, we should remember the item, for example, “I think”, “good advice”, and “an apple”. The way is good because the number of items is less. I’ll try to do for my studying.

Grace Darling

 

Grace Darling

 

     I read Grace Darling this week. I was surprised that this is a true story.  I could read while feeling ambience of the storm.

     I’ll write about the happening. On the afternoon of 6th September, the steamship Forfarshire began its journey, and there were 60 people. The ship’s engines started to make strange noises and it was broken. The day’s weather was heavy rain and strong wind. The wave was big and hit the ship. The ship was broken in two by the big wave. Some people were still saved. They were on the rock. One girl who lives in lighthouse looked at the window. She found there were people on the rock. She told her father and mother and decided to help them with the boat. She and father could save 9 people.

     I think her action for the passenger of the ship was very brave because the storm was the worst in that year and she decided to go although her mother stopped to go out. If you are interested in this book, you should read!

英語教育講義⑩」December 2

 

     I learned CLT’s problems, solutions, and developments. There are problems that teachers don’t really know what CLT means, they don’t have skills and techniques to teach communicatively, and so on. I thought I had not learned communicative English enough in junior and high school. There are some ways to teach English. I think it’s important to teach English from various aspects.

     I read Chemical Secret this week. This is a story of John Duncan who is a biologist. He was a tall and about forty-five years old. After he lost his wife, he spent unhappy time. He had a daughter and a son. He didn’t have job and he hadn’t enough money. However, it was changed by getting his job. He decided to work in a paint factory. John and his children had happy time because they lived in their fine house and can buy everything they want at any time.

     One day, he and factory’s staff, Mary got a new experiment about the waste products from their factory. Some rats had ill because they drink water and eat food including the waste products. He told his boss about it, but his boss didn’t care about it because their factory was putting a few chemicals in the river. John had same idea, and he continue to work in the factory. After that, his daughter’s husband, a reporter, wrote about the seals which had the strange disease. His daughter was angry because he had told her the chemicals are not dangerous. She started a demonstration of Greenworld with her husband and friends. They got into the boat and sailed to upstream, toward the paint factory. At that time, one incident happened and it was changed Duncan’s life again.

    By reading this book, I was reminded of the pollution in Japan. In spite of there were experiments about pulling the chemicals and it effected on animals, the factory didn’t stop and ignored them. The problem may influence us, too. I thought the scene that the factory’s staff didn’t test more detailer and they avoided the problem was not good judgement in this book.

英語教育講義⑨ November 25

I learned Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). I hadn’t known about it, but I studied history and the four components. We also tried the active from structural to communicative. We should be pair and decide A or B, and then they read each sentence which have been ready already. After read some sentences, we should read the sentence which have a lack. We have to think what to say by myself. Like this, the sentences were changing little by little. I was interested in using the pictures and saying about them because the way to express the picture was not one sentence, and each student has different views. We learned how to say from others, too.
