As the Inspector Said and other stories

As the Inspector Said and other stories

Today, I read As the Inspector Said and other stories. This book has five mystery stories, As the Inspector Said, The Man Who Cut Off My Hair, The Railway Crossing, The Blue Cross, and Cash on Delivery. I will introduce one my recommendation,

My recommendation is The Man Who Cut Off My Hair. This is Judith Lee’s story. She is a teacher of lip-read. Her mother is deaf, so lip-reading has always been part of her life. This story is about one happening when she was thirteen years. When she was returning home by train, there were two people sitting opposite her. Two people were talking about their plan to steal silver quietly, but she could read their lips. She went to the place which two people visited and they recognized her. She was tied and cut off her hair. After she was found out, she said the place name that two men said words when they left the place. She looked for them with inspectors to say ‘That’s the man who cut off my hair!’.

I thought she has wonderful skill because she can understand talks only lips moving. Maybe I can’t do it. Some people who is deaf is important to use lip-reading, however, now we wear masks, so I think some people is difficult to understand talking without lip-reading.

Go, Lovely Rose and other stories

Go, Lovely Rose and other stories

I read Go, Lovely Rose and other stories. This book has three stories, Go, Lovely Rose, The Daffodil Sky, and The Dam. I’ll introduce one of them.

Go, Lovely Rose appears main character, Mr. Carteret. He has one daughter. A warm summer night, he didn’t sleep, and it became three o’clock in the morning. He went down to the kitchen to drink water. The moon shone his rose, and he go out with his slippers. He suddenly felt helpless and miserable. He said ‘Susie, Susie, you don’t usually stay out so late’. Susie is his daughter, and he was worried about her because she had not been late. He went out and walk around. Whether his daughter came back or not, please check yourself!

After reading this book, I felt empathy with Mr. Carteret. I thought parents are worried about their children even if they grow up.

Goodbye, Mr Hollywood

Goodbye, Mr Hollywood

I read Goodbye, Mr Hollywood written by John Escott. This is mystery book. The main character, Nick, writes for travel magazines. He visited a village in Canada, and he met mystery girl there.

When he was sitting outside a café, one woman came and sat next to him. She and he enjoyed talking, and she asked him to call him Mr. Hollywood. He said “OK”. He called her mystery girl. Just then, a man with white hair came into the café and sat at a table near them. The girl looked at the man, then looked away again. Nick asked her “Do you know him?”, but she said “No”. Suddenly, she said “I must go now.” and took Nick’s face between her hands and kissed him. “Drive carefully, Mr. Hollywood. Goodbye,” she said and hurried away. He didn’t understand why she kissed him.

He left the café, and the man with white hair followed him. Nick didn’t notice, but he had dangerous happening after meeting the mystery girl. One day, he found the man with white hair and remembered the place where the mystery girl went. He visited there and met her again. He told about the man following him. The man was sitting near them, and then he had a gun and pointed at Nick. The shot went over his head. After that, the shot man went to the polis station, and Nick and the mystery girl also did. And then, Nick learned the answers to the questions. Why did she call Nick “Mr. Hollywood”? Why kissed him when she left? Who is the man with white hair at the next table? Why did the man shoot?

I’d like to read and find out the answers.

The Man from Nowhere

The Man from Nowhere by Bernard Smith

I read The Man from Nowhere written by Bernard Smith this week. This book is a kind of suspense, and main character is a pilot who has his wife and son.

They had planned to go to Tehran, but the weather is terrible. They decided to go to different place, and then the pilot turned the plane to the west. At that time, there was a quick and white light. There was a loud noise, too. The plane crashed and they fell down in the desert. They didn’t call the radio and have enough food. The pilot walked to go to the coast. His wife and son were staying near the broken plane. The man continued to walk in the desert, but he felt bad and couldn’t move.

One boy found him and he was taken to the hospital. He didn’t wake up for three and a half days. When he woke up, he didn’t remember all things, but he remembered what he happened when he heard some words. He told inspector to help his wife and son. They started to look for them.

While reading this book, I worried about his wife and son. After finishing, I thought the son was good boy and they were lucky because they didn’t die in the desert.
