The
Garden Party and Sixpence
I read The Garden Party and Sixpence. This book has
information about Katherine Mansfield, the author, glossary, T or F questions,
and so on. It is like textbook, so it’s easy to read and understand.
This book has two stories. I’ll introduce
one of them, The Garden Party. This story’s main character is Launa who
is a daughter of a middle-class family. She was looking forward to the garden
party which her mother held annual. On the day’s morning, she had breakfast at the
garden with her family, and then she looked at four men and was attracted by working
men. One of them was pale. She backed to her house to ready the party. Before
starting the party, she heard a neighboring workman has died. The news made her
sad and she thought we should cancel our party. Her family is wealth, so they
can do everything they want to do, but she hesitated it because she respects
workmen. The party was held, however, after the party, she decided to visit the
man’s house to send the basket. When she looked the lying man, she sobbed and
left the house. Her brother came to the house because he worried about her. She
was crying and try life, but she tried explaining what life is, but she couldn’t
express.
This story showed the difference between
the girl’s house and the workman. The difference was written by the atmosphere,
feelings, and color. I thought this girl had lived without difficulties because
of her rich life, but through this experience, she understood the existence of
poor families and hard workers.
